Meet the underwater treasures of Cap d’Agde

Welcome to Cap d’Agde. The emblematic seaside resort of the Hérault region is known for its sunshine and pleasant year-round climate, its fine sand and black sand beaches, its volcanic creeks, its nightlife and its fun for all ages. The quality of its bathing waters and the archaeological wealth of this part of the Mediterranean coast are all too often forgotten…

Let’s put that right with a few tips to help you discover this little-known side of the Black Pearl of the Mediterranean during your family vacation in Cap d’Agde.

Step one: Observe

Discovering the Cap d’Agde underwater trail

To begin with, we’re proposing an assault on the Cap d’Agde underwater trail for all.

At the foot of the volcanic cliffs of Cap d’Agde, in the heart of the Marine Protected Area, the underwater trail stretches for around 400 meters round trip.

Its shallow depth, from 1 to 4 meters maximum, makes it accessible to everyone, whether you prefer to stay on the surface, practice snorkelling or take up scuba diving. The Cap d’Agde underwater trail, from the Plagette to the volcanic islets, has been designed so that all types of public can observe and discover the underwater life of the Agatha coast and its flora and fauna, guided by ecological buoys. At the Point Accueil on the Plagette, you can find out more about the species you’ve spotted during your marine walk.

At buoy number 4, a pleasant surprise awaits you: the partial replica of an ancient ship dating from the Greco-Roman period has been submerged, adding an extra playful attraction. At a depth of just 3 meters, it’s accessible to all, and even visible from the surface for the less adventurous.

The 6.2-metre long, 2.6-metre wide and 1.3-metre high replica was created in collaboration with the Musée de l’Éphèbe, Agde’s underwater archaeology museum. A fine way of highlighting the archaeological wealth of the Agde coastline and all the finds dating from the Greco-Roman period that have been made over the years off Cap d’Agde.

The replica is that of the Baie de l’Amitié ship, discovered in 1982 by Denis Fonquerie on a rocky seabed between Grau d’Agde and Pointe de Rochelongue. Various studies carried out on the wreck have determined that the vessel measured between 20 and 25 meters and could carry up to 90 tons before it sank between 50 and 100 BC. Its flat bottom suggests lagoon or fluviomaritime navigation, corresponding to the navigation area of the Gulf of Lion. Part of the hull is now on display at the Musée de l’Ephèbe et d’Archéologie sous-marine in Agde.
